In the world of saxophone playing, Tommy Whittle has been renowned and respected throughout his career. He joined the great Ted Heath Band when he was only 20 years old. After five and a half years he left to further his solo playing desires and, in fact, became a featured soloist with the BBC Showband. He won popularity polls then and again as recently as 1990 and 1991 when he won the British Jazz award for Top Tenor Saxophone. He has been in constant demand in the TV and recording studios and for over two years was the musical director of the Dorchester Hotel, London, after which he became a member of the famous Jack Parnell ATV Orchestra which accompanied major shows such as Bing Crosby, Barbra Streisand, Peggy Lee, Tom Jones, Mike Yarwood etc. His presentation as guest star in clubs or concerts is always greatly received.
Tommy Whittle's newest presentation in the form of duo (Sax with Piano accompaniment) is of particular interest because his knowledge and ability to demonstrate the various styles of saxophone playing is unique. This, coupled with the anecdotes he is able to tell having performed at the highest level throughout his career, has made this a successful presentation be it club dates or Masterclass.
