Don Lusher is regarded as one of the greatest trombone players in the world today and has received many accolades from his peers such as Nelson Riddle who says "Don Lusher besides being one of the true gentlemen of the music business, is a consummate craftsman. He approaches the trombone with the same thoughtful attention to detail I remember in Tommy Dorsey. The same perfect emboucher, breathing apparatus 'singing style' I was exposed to as a member of the Dorsey Orchestra".
Robert Farnon says: "I have a great admiration and a warm gesture of respect and affection for Don Lusher. The supremely skilled master of musical technique and artistry".
Don Lusher was born on November 6th 1923 and was educated in Peterborough - both his parents were active musical Salvationists. His father being the Deputy Band Master and his mother the Songster Leader.
He made up his mind to be a professional musician one night in 1944 just before the invasion of Europe. He was serving in the army where his unit was located on the actual West Ham United football pitch. That evening the Geraldo Orchestra featuring Ted Heath on trombone gave a concert for the troops who were about to embark. Don Lusher did not know that in later years he, himself, would become a trombone player with both Geraldo and also the famous Ted Heath Orchestra.
Don enjoys giving master classes all over the world. He is also active as both composer and arranger and, from time to time, takes on the role of a disc jockey for Radio 2.
In 1976 he was voted Musician of the Year by the BBC Jazz Society and, in 1986, he was nominated for the Wavenden All Music Special Award. The following year he was awarded The Gold Badge of Merit for Services to British Music by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors. He is a professor at the Royal College of Music, where he teaches the College Big Band.
Don lives with his wife, Diana, (a TV Production Assistant) in Cheam, Surrey and enjoys a round of golf whenever he gets the time. He records regularly with Horatio Nelson Records with the Don Lusher Big Band and these releases are best sellers throughout the world.
